Girls Skating on Social Media

For girls who skate, there is only one thing more annoying than 12 year old boys yelling at you to “DO A KICK-FLIP,” from across the street. You might be guessing bruised knees, or ripped pants, or destroyed shoes……but that’s all expected, and lets face it, it adds character.

What really makes my blood boil, is Instagram hate. Instagram hate coming from the internets most bitter male skateboarders. Coincidentally, the same men who claim to be all for women’s rights, but don’t want to see women anywhere near skateboarding.

Let’s take a look at a few examples of comments I’ve extracted from a female skater’s posts that I follow.

Short and Sweet
The comment back actually killed me.
And this one….don’t even get me started on this one.

90% of these comments most likely come from boys who are so insecure about themselves that they just feel like taking it out on anyone.

But the other 10% really believe it is their given right to pick on the fact that girls were late to the game, and get hyped on “the small stuff.” I was also really surprised to see that men get offended solely on what women decide to wear when they skate, as if that really matters.

I think everyone, not only girls, have every right to post their progress on social media. EVEN IF IT’S THE SMALL STUFF. There will always be people out there better than you, or behind where you are, but that does not mean they aren’t allowed to be proud of where they are. I think women in skateboarding have come a long way, but I continue to hope that grey areas like these improve in the future as well. And in terms of my own blog space, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HATE HERE!

And for those offended by fashion…

Wear what makes you glow!

Skater girls literally helped create street style, so let that inspire others. Who cares if that’s through Instagram?

All skaters know that skateboarding is a big mind game. I can’t tell you how many good skate days I’ve had just because I felt good about what I was wearing. It’s more than just “how you look to others in a post.” It’s about what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

So if you take anything out of this post, just remember…you are allowed to be proud of your progress, and express yourself in whatever way makes you feel good. Your content is FOR YOU.
